Culture and Its Discontents

From 22th to 25th September the conference »Culture and Its Discontents« will take place at Innsbruck University. Our aim in organising this conference is twofold: on the one hand, we want to reflect on the term ›culture‹ as such. What meanings does it have? Is there a way of propping up alternative interpretations that diverge from its common meanings – such as culture as a singular practice, as an act, as a technique or as a product? On the other hand, we will discuss the term's strengths and weaknesses. When does it work well for describing social and environmental processes? Do we need other terms and if so, when do we need them?

The conference will take place in the Assembly Hall (main building, Campus Innrain) at the University of Innsbruck. We will provide simultaneous translation of German presentations into English. Das Unbehagen an der Kultur

Vom 22.9. bis 25.9.2014 findet an der Universität Innsbruck die Tagung »Das Unbehagen an der Kultur« statt. Es geht in dieser Tagung einerseits um eine Reflexion des Kulturbegriffs als solchem (Welche Bedeutungen hat der Begriff? Können alternative Interpretationsentwürfe zu den gängigen Begriffsbedeutungen – etwa Kultur als singuläre Praxis, als Handlung, als Technik bzw. auch als Produkt – stark gemacht werden?), andererseits um die Diskussion der Stärken und Schwächen des Kulturbegriffs (Wo ist der Begriff tauglich zur Beschreibung von gesellschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prozessen? Sind – und wenn, dann wann – alternative Begriffe in Anschlag zu bringen?).

Die Tagung findet in der Aula (Hauptgebäude, Campus Innrain) der Universität Innsbruck statt. Deutschsprachige Vorträge werden simultan ins Englische übersetzt. Die Teilnahme an der Tagung ist kostenlos. Wir bitten jedoch um verbindliche Anmeldung bis 1.9.2014 bei Stefanie Blasy (stefanie.blasy@student.uibk.ac.at).
