Faisant suite aux rencontres Bretagne-Cornouailles (2012) et Bretagne-Irlande (2014) organisées par le Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique, la conférence internationale Bretagne-Ecosse se tiendra à Brest les 30 juin et 1er juillet 2016. Elle s’attachera à explorer l’histoire et la nature des échanges (littéraires, artistiques, économiques…) entre la Bretagne et l’Ecosse et à apporter de nouvelles perspectives sur leur histoire commune, leurs identités culturelles et leur multilinguisme (Breton / Gallo / Français, Gaélique / Scots / Anglais), ainsi que sur leurs réponses respectives à un contexte culturel et socio-économique en mutation.
Soucieux de développer la coopération internationale et de permettre à la communauté universitaire et aux institutions culturelles de joindre leurs forces dans l’intérêt de la recherche et de l’accès à la connaissance et à la culture pour le grand public, le comité scientifique invite des propositions portant, par exemple, sur les axes suivants :
- Echanges et contacts historiques, culturels et économiques entre l’Ecosse et la Bretagne
- Langues et transferts linguistiques en Bretagne et en Ecosse
- Politiques linguistiques, langues minoritaires et éducation en Bretagne et en Ecosse
- Littératures de Bretagne et d’Ecosse
- Littérature de voyage : la Bretagne et les Highlands
- Représentations de la Bretagne et de l’Ecosse comme nations « périphériques »
- Le Romantisme et sa réception en Ecosse et Bretagne aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles
- Langue et religion en Ecosse et en Bretagne
- Hagiographie et représentations contemporaines de la « spiritualité celtique » en Ecosse et en Bretagne
- Archéologie, culture matérielle et artistique en Ecosse et en Bretagne
- Représentations de l’Ecosse et de la Bretagne dans les arts visuels
- Renouveaux culturels, musicaux et linguistiques en Bretagne et en Ecosse
- Echanges culturels entre la Bretagne et l’Ecosse au XXIe siècle
- Panceltisme et interceltisme en Bretagne et en Ecosse

Les communications de 20 minutes en anglais, français, gaélique écossais ou breton s’attacheront à actualiser l’étude des relations et échanges entre l’Ecosse et la Bretagne à travers les siècles.

Following on from the successful 2012 Brittany-Cornwall and 2014 Brittany-Ireland conferences organised by the CRBC, the 2016 Brittany-Scotland international conference will be held in Brest on June 30 and July 1, 2016. The conference will bring together scholars from a broad range of disciplines in Brittany, Scotland, and beyond. It will explore relationships and parallels between the two regions/nations, bringing into new focus their shared histories, their multilingual identities and cultures (Breton/Gallo/French; Gaelic/Scots/English) and their responses to shifting cultural and socio-economic circumstances.
Potential topics may include the following:
- historical, cultural, and economic networks, exchanges, and relationships between Brittany and Scotland
- language, language shift, and linguistics in Brittany and Scotland
- language policies and minority-language education in Brittany and Scotland
- literatures of Brittany and Scotland
- travel literature of Brittany and the Highlands
- conceptions of Brittany and the Highlands as ‘on the periphery’
- eighteenth- and nineteenth-century reception of Romantic literature in Brittany and Scotland
- church and language in Brittany and Scotland
- devotion and hagiography in Brittany and Scotland;
- contemporary concepts of ‘Celtic spirituality’ in Brittany and Scotland
- archaeology, material culture, and visual culture in Brittany and Scotland
- representations of Brittany and Scotland in the visual arts
- cultural, musical, and linguistic revivals in Brittany and Scotland
- contemporary cultural exchanges between Scotland and Brittany
- pan-Celticism in Brittany and Scotland
- folklore collection and archives in Brittany and Scotland
- comparative exploration of literature, folklore, dance, and song in Brittany and Scotland
- theatre, drama, and performance in minority-language cultures in Brittany and Scotland
- minority-language publishing in Brittany and Scotland
- shipbuilding and the maritime environment and economy in Brittany and Scotland
- the slave trade, privateering, and piracy in Brittany and Scotland
- conceptions of the imperial in Scotland and Brittany
- Brittany and Scotland in wartime
- Breton and Scottish diasporas, urban and/or overseas
- Brittany and Scotland and Europe – historical and contemporary
The members of the Scientific Committee will be interested in papers in English, French, Scottish Gaelic and Breton, interrogating the relationships between Scotland and Brittany throughout the centuries. Papers should not exceed 20 minutes and proposals (no more than 200 words) accompanied by a short biographical note (50 words) should be sent by 15 December 2015 to: camille.manfredi@univ-brest.fr
