Professor Terence Cave (Emeritus Research Fellow, St John's College, Oxford):

'Mignon's Afterlives: Writing Cultural History with a Literary Corpus'

Abstract:

How is a literary corpus defined and delimited in relation to the aims of cultural history? What kinds of cultural history does it give access to? What is the status of literary "afterlives" in such a history?

Terence Cave will explore questions such as these through the example of his study "Mignon's Afterlives", now nearing completion. He will put forward what is essentially a cognitive view of literature as an object, vehicle and instrument of knowledge.
