Ce colloque international entend explorer les modes de représentations de l’humain à l’aube du post-humain. Même si les confrontations entre un homme organique (ou naturel) et des êtres artificiels remontent au début du XIXè siècle, c’est avant tout la période contemporaine que ce colloque privilégiera aussi bien dans les arts textuels que visuels. La période charnière pour dater les prémisses de la réflexion contemporaine sur le post-humain est celle de l'après seconde guerre mondiale. On voit alors apparaître la possibilité d'une mort globale de l'humanité. Les progrès technologiques n'ont pas cessé depuis et les champs d'exploration de la technique se sont ouverts au vivant, avec l’apparition des biotechnologies. L’automate a cédé la vedette au cyborg, au clone et à l’intelligence artificielle.
Se repose ainsi la question de la définition de la personne et de l’espèce humaine. L’humain semble pouvoir désormais s'écrire et se dire par l'absence et le creux, par ce qu'il n'est pas, ne devrait pas pouvoir être ou ne sera plus. Dans une société qui évolue vers un dépassement de la mesure humaine et du corps humain (qu’il soit genré ou non), le reflet du même peut se révéler totalement autre et donc encore plus menaçant. Par ailleurs, le pouvoir du virtuel sur le réel marque profondément des auteurs et artistes contemporains qui ont recours à l'imaginaire pour illustrer les dérives d'une société qui fonctionnerait par référence à l'image et à l’illusion. La résistance des corps – individuels mais aussi collectifs – s'inscrit alors dans une réflexion politique et philosophique sur une persistance possible de l'humain.
Du gothique au fantastique post-moderne, de la fiction spéculative aux dystopies récentes, les failles des sociétés post-industrielles successives permettent d’explorer l'au-delà des frontières de l’humain et de révéler la menace qui pèse sur ce dernier. Depuis les écrits de Foucault sur le « biopouvoir », les approches socio-philosophiques de Baudrillard, Jameson, Virilio, Badiou et Nancy montrent une fragilisation de l'humain et la menace d'un possible effacement de ce dernier dans un monde où la nature même du réel est remise en question. Au cours des dernières décennies, de nombreux textes sont par ailleurs venus complexifier la réflexion sur l’humain en le mettant en regard d’une post-humanité. Le « manifeste » de Donna Haraway, les écrits de Fukuyama ou de Dominique Lecourt, les polémiques déclenchées par Peter Sloterdijk et ses Règles pour le parc humain sont d’autres symptômes d’une réflexion sur des mutations possibles de l’espèce qui pourraient bien remettre en question une représentation (commune?) de l’humain.
Les propositions de communication pourront s'ancrer dans différents contextes socioculturels et tenter de mettre en relief les aspects ontologiques, épistémologiques, psychologiques, économiques ou politiques qui alimentent la réflexion sur les frontières de l’humain à l’aube du post-humain.

Mapping Humanity and the Post-Human

This international conference will explore the frontiers of humanity at the dawn of the post-human. Even though the dichotomy between organic/natural beings and artificial ones dates back to the early 19th century, this conference will focus on the contemporary period and will welcome papers on both literature and the visual arts. Theoretical reflection on the post-human emerged after the second world war, when the possibility of a global death of humanity became a potential reality. The third industrial revolution then became synonymous with renewed technological evolution, characterized by experiments on the living. Through biotechnologies, computer technologies and nanotechnologies, the automaton has been replaced by cyborgs, clones and artificial intelligence.
Thus we propose to question the definition of humankind and the human species when faced with the trans-human or post-human which hint at an imminent disappearance of humanity as we know it. In a society which increasingly looks beyond the human (whether gendered or not), human identity is questioned through alterity, replication, hybridity and mutation. In addition, the encroachment of the virtual and of simulacra on the real has left a deep imprint on contemporary authors and artists who convoke the imagination to illustrate potential drifts of societies founded on images and illusions. Mapping humanity will thus also mean trying to ponder the emergence of a resistance of bodies (individual, collective, political, social) which would hint at a possible resistance of the human.
We will welcome papers ranging from traditional gothic or fantastic literature to post-modernist writing, speculative fiction, dystopias and post-cataclysmic novels or films as means of representing the frontiers of humanity and emphazing the potential threat against the human. Papers may be rooted in various sociocultural contexts and should explore the ontological, epistemological, aesthetic, economic and political facets of the interactions between the human and the post-human. Theoretical texts ranging from Foucault to Baudrillard, Jameson, Virilio, Badiou or Nancy reveal a weakening of the human and the possible disappearance of humanity in a world in which the very nature of reality is also questioned. In recent years, numerous texts have also introduced the mirror of the post-human as a mode of mapping humanity. Haraway’s Manifesto, Fukuyama or Dominique Lecourt’s thoughts, the polemics around Sloterdijk’s Regeln für den Menschenpark reveal that the issue of possible mutations of the species questions the very possibility of a common mode of representation of the human.
