The notion of the fanatic can be traced back etymologically to both the Latin fanum for the English “temple” and the Arabic fana for “destruction”. Even though this religious component gets lost during the era of the Enlightenment, it appears again in the context of an idealistic fundamentalism today. Fanaticism declares the Self as the only valid form and devalues the Other a priori. This implies an attitude of omnipotence which is encoded in a number of semiotic systems.

Different forms and connotations of the concept of the fanatic have to be distinguished. It implies notions such as the crowd, power, the (religious) madness, as well as socially less problematic but not less important manifestations such as sports fanaticism. It oscillates between enthusiasm and madness and always aims at utopian or dystopian goals. In the context of literature and other media, the element of the fanatic can be found on both the level of content, where fanatic actions are depicted and discussed, and within the poetic discourse itself. We have only to think of avant-garde movements such as Futurism, where the idea of the fanatic is an integral part of the aesthetic system itself.

From a historical point of view, the notion of the fanatic has played a crucial role in the development of European culture: from the crusades and other forms of religious fanaticism such as, for example, the Flagellantism of the 13th and 14th centuries, the inquisition, the persecution of Jews, to the mass delusion of WW1 and WW2 and the imperial fanaticism of Italian colonialism. The connection between the fanatic, fundamentalism and violence looks back at quite a long history in Europe in general and in Italy: from the assassinations of the Risorgimento to today's terrorism as the most crucial manifestation of the fanatic.

The topic is thus of particular importance for the history of Italian literature and culture: we find depictions of the fanatic in Carlo Goldoni (Il poeta fanatico), Alberto Moravia (Fanatico), Pasquale Rossi (L’animo della folla), Vincenzo Monti (Il fanatismo), Vittorio Alfieri (Della tirannide) or Emilio Salgari. Apart from these explicit references, there are a number of implicit references from the beginning of Italian literature onwards: starting with Dante’s Divina Commedia and Chivalric romances (such as Orlando Furioso) up to literary discussions of 20th-century genocides and forced migration (in Ethiopia, Libya or Armenia).

From a broader perspective and in relation to contemporary notions of the fanatic, questions of the conflictive relationship between the Self and the Other, of collectivity, the role of individual and collective fanaticism are of relevance. With respect to current sociopolitical trends in Italy, analyses of different protest movements (G8, Casa Pound, Beppe Grillo, Movimento NOTAV) and cultural investigations of fandom are of great interest.

The notion of the fanatic is strongly connected to manifestations of terror, in particular to the anni di piombo, the actions of the Brigate Rosse, the Mafia, a topic which has been discussed deeply in film and literature: Leonardo Sciascia, Pier Paolo Pasolini or Luigi Malerba – to name just a few – critically reflect upon the topic in their works. Apart from fictional depictions of terrorism, it is also interesting to look at autobiographical texts by members of terrorist groups such as Il volo della farfalla by Adriana Faranda. Furthermore, it can be fruitful to analyze contrastively media depictions of the terror of the 1970s and ’80s with those of current terrorist threats.

Papers may deal with depictions of fanaticism in literature (in all genres) and film but also with the fanatic as a productive notion of literary history and theory such as in “fanatic poetics.” As one possible theoretical question, one could ask whether there is fanatic literature other than the depiction of sociocultural fanaticisms (as is typical, for example, of states of war or scenarios of genocide)?

We welcome also media theoretical analyses of the fanatic in music (e.g., during Fascism), film and video, as well as papers dealing with the role of modern media in the representation of fanatic aesthetics. Apart from scientific papers, we are also happy to receive audio-visual contributions, interviews or literary texts.

The papers can be written either in German, Italian or English. Abstracts should be sent to albert.goeschl@uni-graz.at and doris.pichler@uni-graz.at by 15.05.2016. The accepted papers must be handed in by 31.08.2016 and should not exceed 40.000 characters (incl. spaces).
