M/MLA 2004 : Call for Papers
The Women in French Panel, at the forty-sixth annual Midwest Modern Language Association Convention, St. Louis, MO, November 4-7, 2004
Women and War

The role of women in wartime as workers, terrorists, spies, chroniclers, observers, prisoners, soldiers is transformed with each new conflict. How has the role of women during wartime evolved? What is the role of women in fictional or non-fictional works about past conflicts? How have women themselves depicted war in fiction and autobiography?
The aim of this panel is to examine war as it is experienced, documented, or represented by women.
Open to all periods and genres (including film)
Possible topics may include (and are not limited to the following):
--Fictional narratives of war
--Testimonial and autobiographical narratives of war
--Urban and/or rural experiences of war
--Occupation narratives
--Women as wartime terrorists or guerrilla combatants
--Collaboration and/or resistance
--War and its impact on class relations
--Deportation narratives
--War and its impact on the family and domestic space
--Holocaust literature
The proposed session will adhere strictly to the M/MLA discussion format. Thus, in proposing a paper and then agreeing to participate once it is accepted, each participant also agrees to adhere strictly to the M/MLA guidelines: to maintain current M/MLA membership, to submit the completed paper by late August to the panel organizer for pre-convention distribution (exact deadline to be indicated subsequently), and to limit oral remarks (5-7 minutes maximum) in response to designated discussants.
Please submit a brief (150-250 word) abstract and a short bio by April 15 to Andrew Sobanet at ajs43@georgetown.edu
