20th annual Carolina Conference on Romance Literatures
Building Connections: The Changing Face of Romance Studies
April 3-5, 2014 at UNC – Chapel Hill
The study of Romance literatures faces numerous opportunities and challenges in today’s increasingly globalized world. The growing importance of interdisciplinarity invites literary scholars to think about the future of literature in the age of cultural studies. The prominent position of this academic field within Romance Studies departments both enables and requires us to reconsider the relationship between literature and its sociopolitical context.
Meanwhile, evolutions in technology and the creation of new media call for a redefinition of the text itself. Such evolutions may challenge preconceived notions about how we define and understand literature. These challenges also enable us to unearth new connections between ideas, cultures, periods and genres.
The 2014 Carolina Conference on Romance Literatures invites papers that explore these connections. Submissions may examine current debates on interdisciplinarity, trans-national dialogues, or cultural studies, including but not limited to translation studies, feminist theory, film studies and philosophy. Post-colonial, Decolonial, Subaltern, New Historicist or Queer approaches are also welcome.
Papers or panels on all aspects of literature and film in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Comparative Literature will be considered. Proposals may address, but are not restricted to, the title theme. To submit an abstract of 250 words or less, please register at ccrl.unc.edu.
