Nous invitons des propositions de communications pour un colloque consacré à l'analyse de l'oeuvre de l'écrivain Marie NDiaye. Le colloque aura lieu à l'Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies à Londres, le samedi 28 avril 2007.
Marie NDiaye est reconnue comme l'un des plus importants écrivains contemporains en France. Née à Pithiviers en 1967, elle publie son premier roman Quant au riche avenir chez Minuit en 1985, et avec chacune de ses nombreuses parutions suivantes elle continue à faire preuve d'une capacité étonnante pour franchir de nouvelles frontières. Parmi ses romans on trouve En famille (1990), La Sorcière (1996), et Rosie Carpe (prix Fémina 2001), tandis que la pièce de théâtre Papa doit manger entre dans le répertoire de la Comédie-Française en 2003. L'univers de Marie NDiaye est imprégné d'angoisse, d'humour, de cruauté, d'humiliation et d'incertitude, frôlant très souvent le terrain fantastique. Sa vision romanesque et dramatique singulière pénètre d'une façon à la fois lucide, dérangée et politisée les réalités de la France contemporaine, et plus largement celles de la vie, la mort et le trame de nos existences.
Nous espérons que ce colloque servira à présenter les recherches les plus récentes et innovatrices sur Marie NDiaye, et qu'il abordera plusieurs domaines thématiques et génériques. Nous encourageons en particulier les communications des chercheurs en troisième cycle.

CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite proposals for papers for a one-day conference devoted to the work of contemporary French novelist and playwright Marie NDiaye, to take place at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, London WC1 on Saturday 28 April, 2007.
Marie NDiaye is widely acknowledged as one of France's most important living writers. Born in Pithiviers in 1967, she published her first novel Quant au riche avenir with Minuit in 1985, and has been producing groundbreaking work ever since. Novels include En famille (1990), La Sorcière (1996) and Rosie Carpe (2001, winner of the Prix Fémina), while her play Papa doit manger entered the repertory of the Comédie-Française in 2003. The world of Marie NDiaye is saturated in anxiety, humour, cruelty, humiliation and uncertainty, frequently bordering on fantastical terrain. Her fictional and theatrical vision is singular, a simultaneously lucid, deranged, and effortlessly politicized insight into the realities of contemporary France, into life, death, and the fabric of our worlds.
It is intended that the conference provide a showcase for the latest and the most innovative scholarship on Marie NDiaye and that it will address a wide range of thematic and generic issues. We welcome proposals from specialists on NDiaye, and are especially keen to welcome contributions from postgraduate students working on NDiaye.
We aim to include papers and/or panels on some of the following areas:
- Text and image in Marie NDiaye
- Marie NDiaye's theatre
- The family romance
- Childhood and adolescence
- Maternity and motherhood
- Marie NDiaye and the politics of class, sex, race
- Spaces, places and / or nomadism in the fiction of Marie NDiaye
- Transformation and / or trauma
- The fantastic and the real
- Bathos and / or pathos
- Humour and / or horror
- The senses in the fiction of Marie NDiaye
This is by no means intended as an exhaustive list: the organisers welcome other suggestions.

We envisage the publication of the first edited collection of scholarship on NDiaye arising from the event.
