'Middle Eastern Francospheres'

Special Issue of Francosphères ed. by Claire Launchbury

Contributions are requested for a special issue of the journal Francopsheres addressing French-language literature, film and culture in the Middle East produced by otherwise Arabophone artists and communities. While Lebanon has been at the forefront of research in the region since French remains widely spoken in the country and is an official language of the Republic, Syria, Egypt and the Occupied Palestinian Territories are also locations where cultural production takes place or has taken place in French. I am seeking articles which might look at migration within the region, from rural to urban centres or as the result of political upheaval, at francophone network discourses across the Eastern Mediterranean, on the legacies of French political influence in mandated Syria and Lebanon or the educational influence of French missions in Palestine and how these become represented in projects, film, literature and theatre; translanguaging and the relationship between French and Arabic in poetry and literature; the expression of French in activism during the Arab uprisings or in arguments for independence is also of interest.

Articles can be in French or English and final deadline for submission is end November 2016.

Could proposals be sent to me at claire.launchbury@sas.ac.uk by close of business on 29 June.
