41st Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern LanguageAssociation (NeMLA)

April 7-11, 2010

Montreal, Quebec -(www.nemla.org)

Stemming from the interest generated by thesuccessful 2009 NeMLA Panel on Women Artists and Social Movements in LatinAmerica, the 2010 Panel endeavours to focus on those areas which haveexperienced revolutionary movements in the last half of the 20thcentury -Nicaragua, Chiapas, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, to name only a few. Withinthese diverse movements, women have often had to take on (or been conferred)very specific and life-changing roles. This social shift from “traditional”Spanish American society has been reflected in the literary production of womenwriters of these areas. Women writers perceive and interpret revolution in aplethora of ways, whether it is implicitly hinted at or explicitly mentioned intheir works. Their literary production is often engendered from a marginalizedstandpoint and remains on the periphery of the canon, while doubtlesslyarticulating a feminine penetration of both the literary and political spheres. With the aim of unearthing possible symmetries and bridging continents, thisPanel welcomes submissions about women writers from all the Spanish-speakinggeographic areas of the Americas, and especially from those women from “twice-marginalized” groups (Indigenous,Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin-American, minority communities, etc.).
