Women in Medicine andMedicine for Women from Antiquity to Early Modern Times:

                  Europeanand Mediterranean Contexts

 3-5 January, 2006

Women and the care of the female body have become central themesin recent years in Cultural History and contemporary critical theories. “Womenin Medicine and Medicine for Women” will bring together a group of aboutfifteen leading scholars in the History of Medicine and Cultural History toexplore the representation of women in literature and art and to traceattitudes towards women’s health and well-being in the medical discourses andanatomic theories transmitted from Antiquity to Early Modern times.  Our main emphasis will be on medical andlegal works as well as philosophical and literary texts. Central questions andtopics to be discussed:

Femalephysicians of all kinds and midwives in women’s sub-cultures

 

We would like to enlarge the group and invite scholars particularlyfrom the fields of Women and gender History as well as Art History (in thecontexts of Europe and the Mediterranean from ancient through medieval to early modern times) tocontribute papers, either in French or in English.
