Call for papers for an international symposium

“William Shakespeare and world culture”

Call for papers for a symposium

The Center of High Studies of Literature proposes a call for papers on “William Shakespeare and world culture”. The international symposium will take place from April 21st to 23rd 2015 in the conference room of the town library of La Riche, Place du Maréchal Leclerc. The exhibition will take place from April 1st to 30th 2015 in the hall (1st floor) of the François Rabelais University library, 3 rue des Tanneurs, and in the town library of La Riche.

Shakespeare is a monument of world literature. A study conducted by the Norwegian book club in 2002 inventoried one hundred of his books as being the best of all times. A list of 85 authors was established: 75 appear once, 6 twice, 3 three times. One comes first with four appearances. So Fyodor Dostoyevsky is the first before Shakespeare who is the second, for Hamlet, King Lear and Othello, exaequo with Franz Kafka and Tolstoy.

In addition, the Index Translationum, managed by the UNESCO, shows that the author is the third most translated in the world just behind Agatha Christie and Jules Verne.

The aim of this international symposium is to honor the great poet, playwright and writer in 2015, date chosen because it is equidistant between the 450th anniversary of his birth (1564-2014) and the 400th commemoration of his death (1616-2016).

Scholars, critics, essayists, researchers, academics, writers, journalists, artists selected to make a presentation will discuss not only about the works of Shakespeare, the man, his sources of inspiration, his language but also about the influence of his works on world literature.

The topic of "William Shakespeare and world culture" is open and international. It revolves around a multidisciplinary context whose areas are: world literature, art, poetry, history, philosophy, culture, linguistics, medicine, architecture, painting, ecology, journalism, cinema, criticism, etc. All these disciplines will aim at enlightening the knowledge of Shakespearean studies.

The publication of the texts of conferences is planned if a scientific and academic publisher accepts all of them.

The official working languages are French and English. However, since we wish to expand language, anyone speaking another language will be able to participate to the symposium because simultaneous translations are planned.
