Translating and Adapting Petrarch

(Proposed Collection of Essays)

Following up on a study day that took place February 19, 2016, the research
team devoted to Translating and Adapting the Sonnet (Sorbonne Nouvelle/
Sorbonne Paris Cité Universities and international partners) is seeking essays
to complement a proposed collection of essays devoted to Translating and
adapting Petrarch in Europe. The programme of our initial study day, which
featured talks and readings by poets Jacques Roubaud, Tim Atkins and Jeff
Hilson, may be viewed here : https://sonnetintranslation.wordpress.com/past/

For the remainder of the volume, we are mainly seeking studies of Petrarch’s
Canzoniere in translation or adaptation but are also willing to consider
translations of the rest of Petrarch’s œuvre, especially if they are recent.

Essays might address the following topics, although we would consider other
proposals as well:

•       Translating or adapting Petrarch in the early modern era : histories of
translations of the Canzoniere, translation (Marot, Howard...) vs. imitation
(Du Bellay,  Constable...) or adaptation (Wyatt)
•       Intersemiotic/intermedial adaptations : portraits of Petrarch,
iconography for the Trionfi, musical adaptations of the Canzoniere (Liszt,
Eliott Carter...)
•       Translating or adapting Petrarch in the 20th Century – cultural
studies or translation studies approaches, the influence of translations on the
reception of the Canzoniere, translation and adaptation of Petrarch’s Latin
works (De Vita solitaria, Epistolae...)
•       Petrarch and 21st century poets : Yves Bonnefoy, Jacques Roubaud, Tim
Atkins, Peter Hughes, John Fuller, Andrea Zanzotto, etc

Proposed contributions must be in English. Young and early-career researchers
are welcome to submit abstracts for consideration.

Please send abstracts (500 words max.) of proposed papers to
sonnetintranslation@gmail.com by May 20, 2016 (CC to Thomas Vuong :
ths.vuong@gmail.com and carole.birkan-berz@univ-paris3.fr).

Abstracts should by accompanied by a short biographical note and should be sent in two formats for peer review :

one in .docx format and one as an anonymous .pdf document.

Queries are also welcome.
