Forbidden Knowledges: Transformations in Criticism (6/15/01; 11/3/01)

This one-day conference, organized by the doctoral students of the School of English and Humanities at the University of London (Birkbeck College), will be held November 3, 2001. Our keynote speakers will be Thomas DOCHERTY and Regenia GAGNIER. In the 21st century we're reflecting on the transformations in criticism that have taken place in the last two to three decades.

What are the new limits of criticism today? How far does our discipline engage with what Roland BARTHES called 'the limits of the doxa'? What transformations of knowledges have taken place? And what taboos and silent tyrannies now operate in our discipline?

Such questions are also of interest to related disciplines, and the organizers see this as an opportunity to draw together literary critics and other scholars to discuss the changing nature of criticism. We invite proposals that concentrate on a range of themes, which might include but are not restricted to: taboo and sexuality/gender; taboo and ethnicity/class; taboo and religion; taboo and urban/rural divide; taboo and death; taboo and otherness; taboo and trickster.

Proposals from faculty and postgraduates are welcome! Proposals should be sent by Friday, June 16 2001, to: Leila PRELEC, Graduate Conference, Birkbeck College, School of English and Humanities, Malet Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7HX (or email your proposal to lprelec@hotmail.com). Proposals should consist of title and abstract (between 350 and 500 words) and include a CV or a brief biographical sketch.
