The City and the Sea

A multidisciplinary conference jointly organised by Princeton University, University College London, National Maritime Museum.
To be held at the Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, University of London, London, WC1E 7HU Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October 2001.

Throughout history, the sea has created cities and cities have directed and developed humankind's activities upon the sea. This two-day conference aims to explore the relationship between the city and the sea in a number of wide-ranging sessions. Possible topics could include the city and the sea in literature, art, music and film; the sea's impact on social and cultural histories of the city, and vice versa; commercial, strategic and imperial issues; the geography of the city and the sea; the city and the sea and individual, national and imperial identity; and the changing relationship between the city and the sea today.

Keynote speakers include: Martin Daunton, Harriet Guest, and Simon Schaffer

We invite proposals for papers; the deadline is 25 June 2001 and the abstracts should be up to 500 words. Please send them to:
