The Centre for Seventeenth-Century French Theatre (C17FT) is organising a one-day conference to be held at Goldsmiths, University of London, on Friday, 27 April 2002. The theme will be "Staging the Text".

We are therefore inviting papers focused on performance spaces and the staging of drama, including acting styles, decor, costume or any other aspect of material presentation. The period concerned will encompass the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in France. Preference may be given to papers engaging with actual realisations or specific productions of individual seventeenth- or eighteenth-century French texts in any period or in any country. Professor Christian Biet of the Department of Theatre Studies in the University of Paris-X (Nanterre) has agreed to be our guest speaker.

Proposals for papers (20 minutes length) on no more than one side of A4 should be sent to Dr Jan Clarke, Department of French, University of Durham, Elvet Riverside, Durham, DH1 3JT by 1 December 2001. Postgraduate contributions will be most welcome.

Registrations for the conference (£15 standard fee, £10 postgraduate fee) should be sent to Professor Henry Phillips at Department of French Studies, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL by 27 February, 2002. A finger-buffet lunch will be available at £6.99. Cheques should be made payable to Centre for Seventeenth-Century French Theatre.
