Space, Place and Landscape: Women and Environments in Contemporary French Culture Conference of the Contemporary Women's Writing in French Seminar, to be held at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, London, UK, 26 - 28 October 2006

Women's identities have always been intimately linked with a sense of place. The history of feminism in the last century is strewn with examples of the re-appropriation and the re-imagining of space by women.

This conference brings into focus the contemporary face of ongoing debates about women and space and draws out the most salient aspects of theories and practices of reconfiguring within a broad, interdisciplinary framework. Major French practitioners from the fields of literature, cinema and the visual arts will participate. We are delighted that AGNES VARDA, MARIE DARRIEUSSECQ and VALERIE MREJEN will join us for a series of screenings and discussions. The conference also contains contributions from scholars working in literature, cinema, art, photography, anthropology, architecture and feminist theory.
