The theme of this year’s University of Wales Romance Studies Colloquium (July 1 - 3) is ‘Adaptation: Intertextual Transformations across Different Media’.
This theme was chosen by the late Dr Jane Dunnett, formerly Senior Lecturer in Italian and the journal’s subject editor for Italian; it reflects her own research interests; she even selected the key note speakers. The colloquium is dedicated to her memory and will include a tribute by her close friend and colleague, Giovanni Pavanelli.
Delegates at the colloquium will come from the UK, Europe and the United States. The keynote sessions represent each of the main Romance languages:
French
Mary Orr (University of Southampton): ‘Nature as Nature ? The Role of the Adaptor and the Intermediality of Science’.
This paper is a ‘thought experiment in how to respond to 21st century science, scientism and the discourses of STEM by examining how ‘Romance Studies’ research exposes and tempers their assumptions’.
Italian
Ann Hallamore Caesar (University of Warwick): ‘Readers and Spectators: Adaptation, Translation and Genre in Eighteenth-Century Venice’.
This paper ‘takes examples of novels turned into play-scripts and librettos to consider how they worked in relation to audiences who may or may not have known the source text or intermediary works’.
Spanish
John London (Goldsmith’s College, University of London): ‘Bureaucracy without Dogs: Visual Language’.
'When language dictates images, what requires translation? By considering some famous mistakes in visual translation, it is possible to demonstrate the potential for the varying embodiment of meaning and form'.
Other papers will focus on a variety of adaptations relating to the works of writers including Gustave Flaubert, Jean Cocteau, Honoré de Balzac, Marcel Proust, Alberto Moravia, Gaston Leroux, Madame de La Fayette; Dante and Shakespeare; Julio Cortázar, Jeremy Bentham, Giovanni Verga, Carlo Emilio Gadda and Freidrich Dürrenmatt, Eugène Ionesco, Luigi Pirandello, Giancario De Cataldo and Roberto Saviano, Isabel Allende.
