CALL FOR PAPERS
Tenth Annual Conference
of the Australian Society for French Studies (ASFS)
to be held by the Department of French Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia
from 30 September to 2 October 2002.
Regards croises: the French and Terra australis
from the sixteenth century to the present
The French scientific voyage that Napoleon sent to the Antipodes in 1800 gave rise to a wealth of written and iconographical material concerning contact with the natives of the countries visited, in particular with the Australian Aborigines.
To commemorate the five months that the Baudin expedition spent in Port Jackson from June to November 1802, papers are invited on any aspect of the Baudin expedition and on other early French voyages to Australia, as well as on associated themes: voyages and landscapes, real and imaginary; intercultural encounters; utopias and distopias.
Papers are also invited on any other aspect of French Studies in Australia or Australian Studies in France.
Papers may be presented in either English or French and an abstract of 200 words should be submitted by 28 February, 2002.
