ROOKWOOD PRESS ANNOUNCES:

La Fontaine à lécole républicaine: Du poète universel au classique scolaire,by RALPH ALBANESE ISBN 1886365245. Illustrations. 340 pages. Paperback. $49.95.

The Fables of La Fontaine have had a profound impact on French culture, since the poet was represented as a supreme cultural icon, a pedagogical model, and an exemplar of Frenchness. Indeed, nineteenth-century academic discourse transformed him into a lay saint capable of transmitting the moral and intellectual ideology of the Third Republic. As a foundational reference for Republican schooling, the Fables contributed to the acculturation and the edification of the student/subject by means of discursive practices that were markedly normative and corrective. This book addresses not only the institutionalization of La Fontaine within the nineteenth-century French educational system but also the social as well as cultural implications of his decanonization in contemporary France.
