WHAT IS ART FOR?
Why did the arts arise originally, and why have they persisted so that
some form of the arts exists in every human society?

Public lecture on Tuesday June 4, 2002, at 6 p.m.
Ihresalen, Språkvetenskapligt Centrum (SVC)
Villavägen 6, Uppsala, Suède

Ellen Dissanayake is an independent scholar, writer, and lecturer, whose
original "bio-evolutionary" approach to the arts offers new ways of
addressing old questions about art's nature and purpose.  Her work draws
upon the years she has lived and worked in non-Western countries, among
them Sri Lanka, India, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Papua New Guinea. She is
the author of WHAT IS ART FOR? (1988), HOMO AESTHETICUS: WHERE ART COMES
FROM AND WHY (1992), ART AND INTIMACY (2000), and more than twenty
scholarly articles.

Arranged by the department of English; the department of Art History; and
the department of ALM, Aesthetics, and Cultural Studies.
