Tenure System, 12-month basis, 100% time
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

DUTIES: Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of French, Classics, and Italian. The department is located in the College of Arts and Letters and offers an M.A. and Ph.D. in French, a B.A. in Classical Studies and in French, and a teaching minor in Italian. The chair will lead and manage the department; represent the department within the college, the university, and the community; communicate department initiatives and concerns to college and university administrators; encourage and promote excellence in research, teaching, and service while enhancing opportunities for the professional development of faculty and students. The successful candidate will also facilitate collaboration with other units, including the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR), the Center for Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities (CISAH), the African Studies Center, the Canadian Studies Centre, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Center for European and Russian/Eurasian Studies, the Global Literary and Cultural Studies research cluster (GLCS), the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and the American School at Rome. The successful applicant will also contribute to the College's programmatic emphasis on global studies, including the development of an undergraduate major in Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. Candidates should have a strong record of research, publication, and teaching meriting a tenured appointment at the level of advanced associate professor in any of the department programs. The successful candidate will have relevant administrative experience at a research-oriented institution and will have participated actively in a graduate program.
