Partonopeus in Europe

4th - 6th July 2003

Partonopeus de Blois is a key text in the development of Old French romance and the literatures that responded to it across medieval Europe. Partonopeus itself exists in a number of different versions that testify to its enduring appeal to audiences; it also lies at the centre of a network of intertextual relationships: with other twelfth- and thirteenth-century French romances, and with adaptations of the story in a number of other European languages. The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars working in all these areas, to exchange ideas and promote interdisciplinary approaches to this rich textual tradition.

All the European versions of the text (including Partonopeus de Blois, Konrad von Würzburg's Partonopier und Meliur, the Middle English Partonope of Blois, Partalopa saga, Persenober, El Conde Partinuples, Parthonopeus van Bloys and Bel Gherardino) are the core texts which will form the basis for discussion. Our list of speakers includes scholars based in seven countries who will be presenting papers on seven different versions of the text.
