Call for Papers
DIEGESIS. Interdisziplinäres E-Journal für Erzählforschung / E-Journal for Narrative Re-search across the Disciplines Volume 2, Number 2, date of publication: October 2013
Topic: Narration in Journalism
Submission date for abstracts: September 30th, 2012
Submission date for accepted contributions: July 30th, 2013
Journalistic texts are expected to adhere strictly to the facts and to contain a relatively large amount of information. At the same time, such texts are in economic competition with, and must prevail over, other similar texts. Journalists are supposed to provide a connection between their readers or viewers and the medium. One of the typical means used to generate attention on the part of the public is entertainment. Prosaic information is thus transformed into infotainment via the use of entertainment-related aspects. One way to present news of any kind in an entertaining form can be found in the telling of stories. As soon as facts are presented as stories, however, questions immediately arise: how might these facts have been changed through their transformation into narrative? Moreover, how might the employment of a certain narrative instance, the depiction of characters, the associated perspectivation, and the use of certain elements to generate suspense have contributed to moving the narrative into fictional territory, beyond the realm of ‘mere fact’?
For our issue focusing on “Narration in Journalism”, we are looking for articles which investigate connections between the journalistic mediation of information and the presentation of this information in narrative form. The articles should be between 15-20 pages in length, and should utilize current tools from the field of narratological research in order to analyze narration in journalism, e.g. its specific structure, impact, or other related aspects. Suitable objects of study include journalistic pieces from all mediums (in other words, from traditional print media as well as from radio, television, and the Internet). In particular, we are hoping to receive articles from authors working in non-philological disciplines.
We invite abstracts of approximately half a page (DIN-A4) by September 30th, 2012 at the latest. Please send your abstract, along with a brief CV, to the editorial team of DIEGESIS (Dr. Matthias Aumüller and Dr. Filippo Smerilli): redaktiondiegesis@uni-wuppertal.de. The editorial team and the editors will decide on the acceptability of proposals by November 30th, 2012. Contributions have to be submitted by July 30th, 2013.
In addition, we always welcome REVIEWS of new works (i.e. works published in the last three to four years) in the field of narratology; here, too, we specifically welcome cross-disciplinary contributions in addition to contributions from those working in the fields of language and literature. Recommendations for reviews can be sent to the aforementioned e-mail address at any time; in your e-mail, you should name the book(s) you would like to review and provide a brief overview of your academic career.

About DIEGESIS:
The new e-journal DIEGESIS. Interdisziplinäres E-Journal für Erzählforschung / E-Journal for Narrative Research across the Disciplines, which is funded by the German Research Funding Organisation (DFG), will be released as an open access publication exclusively on the internet from October 2012 onwards. The first issue (publication date: October 2012) will deal with the topic “Narratology in the 21st Century. An Interdisciplinary Review,” whereas the second issue (publication date: April 2013) will deal with the topic “Narration and Medium.” The website of the e-journal (www.diegesis.uni-wuppertal.de) will be activated simultaneously with the publication of the first issue.
The quality of all articles appearing in DIEGESIS is assured by an anonymous peer-review procedure. The international peer reviewers who congregate in an advisory panel represent a large spectrum of more than twenty subjects.

On the objectives of DIEGESIS:
The concept of ‘narrativity’ has advanced to a leading category in diverse disciplines of the humanities, cultural studies and the social sciences. The journal DIEGESIS provides an interdisciplinary platform for the respective manifold research interests. It is published in digital format online and pursues the following two objectives: orientation and actuality. Reviews ongoingly inform about the latest publications; articles on changing key subjects reflect upon recent developments within the international field of narrative research.
DIEGESIS offers to all scholars who work in the field of narratology a forum which enhances the communication across disciplinary boundaries. Thanks to its interdisciplinary orientation and its free availability on the internet as an open access journal, the e-journal, which is published in English and in German, fills a gap within the existing range of narratological journals.
The journal is published at the University of Wuppertal and in cooperation with the local Centre of Narrative Research (CNR) (www.zef.uni-wuppertal.de) by professors Matei Chihaia (Romance studies), Matías Martínez (German studies), Michael Scheffel (general literary studies) and Roy Sommer (English and American studies).
