Memory and Commemoration

The Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (ANZAMEMS) will hold its fourth conference from 5-8 February 2003 at The University of Melbourne, Australia. The conference theme is 'Memory and Commemoration'. We hope to attract papers that reflect on such topics as forms of commemoration and ways of remembering across time and space; on modern creation and recollection of medieval and early modern pasts; on historical, literary and artistic representations of memory; on the material and ritual culture of commemorating the living and dead, past events and mystic occurrences; on genealogies, tradition and familial memory, etc.

The programming committee invites proposals (150 words) for 20 minute papers. Please send your title, abstract and a preliminary indication of any audio-visual requirements to the convenor, Megan Cassidy-Welch
(email: anzamems-2003@unimelb.edu.au), by Friday 6 September, 2002.

We also invite members of the society to put together their own panels. Proposals for such panels, including a title and a call for papers (150 words), should reach the committee by Friday 26 May, 2002. See the conference website (http://www.history.unimelb.edu.au/anzamems) for further details regarding the organisation and structure of panels.
