Department of French Studies at LSU

All applicants to the PhD program will automatically be considered for the Edouard Glissant Teaching Assistantships in French Studies. One or more of these special assistantships, which carry a $25,000 annual stipend, will be awarded to a student or students entering our program in Fall 2016.  Deadline for application is February 1, 2016.

Graduate students in the Department of French Studies at LSU have the opportunity to study and research in all areas of French and Francophone literatures, from the medieval period to contemporary writings of the Francophone world. Our faculty have particular depth of expertise in contemporary French philosophy and theory; medieval and early-modern studies; Francophone literature of sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean and Louisiana; contemporary poetic practice; gender studies; sociolinguistics; and interdisciplinary approaches incorporating visual arts, film, and performance.  We take particular pride in our mentorship of each individual student, as well as the diverse opportunities for teaching and enrichment that make graduate study at LSU a uniquely rewarding experience.

Here are a few reasons to consider graduate study in French at LSU:

– Now in its tenth year, the DFS Annual Graduate Student Conference has been recognized by LSU as the “Most Outstanding Academic/Educational Program,” providing a venue for presentation of original research in a formal setting and attracting graduate student participants, and senior keynote speakers, from around the country and the world.

– Home to one of the largest undergraduate French language programs in the country, our department offers graduate students a wide array of teaching experience, including teaching abroad.

– Graduate students regularly participate in exchange programs with universities in Poitiers and Limoges, as well as helping to coordinate and serving as instructors for DFS undergraduate study-abroad programs in Paris and in the French Alps.

– Our substantial scholarship fund supports graduate student travel and participation in special programs such as the Dartmouth Summer Institute in French Cultural Studies, a prestigious four-week program on with experts from both sides of the Atlantic.

– We enjoy a special relationship with the Francophone community in Arnaudville, Louisiana, with opportunities for immersion programs in Cajun French language and culture, from Zydeco to Gumbo to fishing for crawfish!

We offer generous stipend packages to all accepted students that include full tuition waivers and access to affordable health insurance. For more information on our program, see: http://www.lsu.edu/hss/french
