The Spanish section is moving toward greater integration between the cultural and linguistic aspects of foreign-language learning. Applicants with a capacity to facilitate such integration are therefore highly desirable.

The successful applicant must have:

  • a PhD in the area of Hispanic Literature and/or culture, preferably with a Hispanic Caribbean and/or Latin American area of focus, or strong transferability to the Caribbean context;
  • native or near-native competence in Spanish, with demonstrable experience in the teaching of Hispanic Literature and culture, including Hispanic Caribbean content, at undergraduate and graduate levels, using a dynamic, student-centred approach in a technologically integrated environment;
  • previous experience teaching tertiary-level Spanish courses outside the area of literature specifically, in areas such as Spanish language or societal aspects of Hispanic Studies (for example, media, rights and citizenship, migration and diaspora), highly valued in light of the Section's current curricular diversification endeavours;
  • experience with study abroad and immersion programmes,  since the integration of these into the degree programme is currently a priority of the Spanish section;
  • active research engagement and publication in a relevant area or areas such as Hispanic literature, culture and/or society, pedagogy for language and culture learning, or intercultural development.

The successful applicant will be expected to assume duties by August 1, 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Detailed applications (two copies) giving full particulars of qualifications, experience and biodata and three (3) signed up-to-date referee reports should be sent as soon as possible to The Assistant Registrar (Human Resources), The University of the West Indies, P.O. Box 64, Bridgetown, Barbados.  Fax (246) 417-0330; Email: humanresources@cavehill.uwi.edu.  If your first and higher degrees were obtained from different Universities, please provide a referee report from each University and one referee should be a member of your present organization.
