La Nature Dévoilée. French Literary Responses to Science, ed. and with an intro. by Larry Duffy & Catherine Emerson, Department of French, University of Hull, 2000 (ISBN: 0-9539802-0-0) #11.99 + p&p

'This book comprises twelve essays, nine of which are based on papers given at a Postgraduate Research day at the University of Hull in March 1998 [...] The essays explore the complexities of scientific and natural discourses across five centuries of literary production. Shifting scientific paradigms are identified, as is the emergence of political doctrines expressed in the vocabulary of science, from Marxism to the theories behind the colonial project. c-19th changes in industrial production have been accompanied by a similar change in approaches to scientific method itself and to artistic representation. The impact of these changes on modern French literature has been far-reaching. Nontheless, there are surprising continuities from the Middle Ages to the present day.'
