The CNWS Research School, Leiden University, is organizing an international workshop titled 'The Caribbean City' to be held in Leiden, The Netherlands, December 1-3, 2004.

This three-day workshop aims to bring together experts from a range of academic disciplines to discuss various socio-cultural aspects of the urban Caribbean. As relatively little has been published on this topic, the intent is to bring together those working in this field to discuss papers in preparation for publication. In the context of this workshop, the Caribbean is understood to be that socio-cultural area incompassing the islands in the Caribbean Sea as well as Belize and the Guyanas. We wish to state explicitly that papers from various academic fields - such as anthropology, history, geography - are welcome; potential topics include but are not limited to urban or neighborhood development, urban politics, urban architecture, urban environment, urban (sub)cultures and lifestyles, urban (informal) economy and urban symbolism.

Limited funds are available for the reimbursement of travel costs for a restricted number of participants. Interested contributors are invited to register proposing a provisional topic by May 15, 2004. Abstracts should be submitted by August 31, 2004. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words in length and should be sent in electronic form or in hard copy to the address below.
