Haitian Summer Institute

Now in its seventh year, the Florida Consortium for Latin American Studies (Florida International University and University of Florida) sponsors the Haitian Summer Institute, designed as an intensive introduction to the Haitian Creole language and Haitian culture and politics. The Institute focuses on Haiti through an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating the disciplines of language, linguistics, literature, history, international relations, religious studies, economics, sociology/anthropology and political science.

The four-week program at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus in Miami, Florida, is divided into two sessions.  Haitian Creole language is taught in the morning sessions. In the afternoon sessions, the historical, cultural and political development of Haiti is addressed through a series of lectures by Haitian experts from FIU, UF, and other universities throughout the country.

In addition to the coursework at FIU, there is an optional 3-credit study abroad component of the program that takes place in Haiti for two weeks. This trip includes study and travel throughout the country and visits to sites of historical importance.

The Haitian Summer Institute is open to degree-seeking students, non-degree-seeking students, undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and professionals.

For more information about the Haitian Summer Institute, please see the institute web site.
