Geography and National Identity in French Literature

Publié le par Vincent Ferré (Source : Balzac L)

For the next NEMLA conference in Boston in March 2003, I propose a panel of the topic of "Geography and National Identity in French Literature."  Many French writers of the twentieth century have been uprooted from the land of
their birth or have ties to other cultures.  In their works, what roles do these multiple geographic connections play in the representation of national identity?  What is the role of geographic, political, and cultural affiliation in the development of characters' notions of national identity?
More, generally, is it possible to speak of hybrid or hyphenated literatures, e.g. of a Beur literature or a Franco-Jewish literature?

Scholars interested in participating in this panel should send an abstract, one or two paragraphs long, to me by September 1, 2002.
