Study day
CESAR Images: French Theatre Iconography (1600 - 1800)

Convenor: Professor Valerie WORTH, Oxford Brookes University

Keynote Speaker: Dr Catherine GUILLOT (Université de Paris III)

Other speakers: Professor Mark BANNISTER (Oxford Brookes); Dr Noémie COURTÈS (Exeter College, Oxford ); Dr Hugh ROBERTS (Oxford Brookes); and Dr Wes WILLIAMS (New College, Oxford).

The study day presents the imagebank of CESAR (Calendrier Électronique des Spectacles sous l'Ancien Régime et sous la Révolution), an addition to the website - www.cesar.org.uk - which records all key information concerning the French theatre, 1600-1800.

‘CESAR Images' (http://www.cesar.org.uk/cesar2/imgs/index.php), an AHRC-funded project directed by Professor Mark Bannister (Oxford Brookes), is an interactive repository of iconography relating to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French theatre. The study day will present the work in progress, addressing critical issues of interpretation of iconographic material and the questions raised in building the imagebank. CESAR-Images is inherently interdisciplinary and of particular interest to historians of theatre, art, costume and architecture as well as creators of dynamic digital resources.

The study day is open to everyone interested. Bookings for lunch must be made in advance (cost £7.50) by contacting Dr Hugh Roberts (h.roberts@brookes.ac.uk) before 1st June 2005.
