Scandalous Modernisms: Forgeries, Frauds and Hoaxes

A proposed panel for the Modernist Studies Association conference, "The New Modernisms III" at Rice University in October 2001.

From its commonplace associations with the avant-garde, to the notorious Wilde and Woolsey trials, modernism has always been bound up with questions of scandal and "legality." For this proposed panel, I am looking for papers which examine instances of modernist scandals, either real or perceived. I'm particularly interested in papers which explore specific instances of fraud (forged editions, plagiarism, piracy), though broader theoretical readings of modernism and scandal are also welcome. What can such scandalous acts tell us about the material production about modernism, as it is broadly concieved? What, for instance, do these scandals say about the perceived financial and cultural capital of the modernist editor, author, publisher, or patron?
