Call for Papers

The early Arabic philosophical texts which transferred the Greek concepts and aesthetic, and metaphysical perceptions from their original cultural contexts into the Arabic language and thought are of very great importance because they indicate the beginning of the contact between the Arabic culture and Greek philosophy. They also chronicle an important period in the history of Arabic and Islamic civilization and the history of Humanity in general.

As is the case in every interchange between intellectually, ideologically and religiously different systems, this contact has meant moving from the common expressive level and familiar intellectual perception of a language to another. In the process, the target language and culture opened up to a multitude of new terms, uncommon conceptual systems and unprecedented anthological and metaphysical issues.

In the Arabic /Greek situation, the interaction between the two did indeed enrich the old Arabic thought with terminological mechanisms and different perceptions of the world. It was also a real test for the Arabic language and civilization’s ability to interact with different intellectual and cultural activities and keep pace with the different incoming theoretical and conceptual systems. As such, it became an urgent task for the emerging Arabo-Islamic civilization to emphasize its ability to be creative in all fields.

Despite the fact that the translation of ancient sciences in the Arabo-Islamic civilization officially started with the Abbasid dynasty, the cognitive and lexical discourse began prior to this date along with the other cultures. In addition, the translators followed various paths in transferring the early sciences, be it at the official outset of the translation movement or in its very early days. Translators also followed different approaches depending on the characteristics of the source text and its subject matter. It goes without saying that these translators realized the magnitude of that historical and intellectual point in time, which coincided with the more general historical and intellectual atmosphere in which the original sciences flourished and became well established.

By discussing aspects of the interaction between the adopted foreign sciences and the original ones, emphasizing the early Greek philosophical texts translated by the Arabs and investigating their methods and mechanisms, we can redefine the features of a precise moment in the history of the emergence and development of philosophical thought amongst the Arabs. Interestingly enough, investiating the early Arabic philosophical texts and delving into their structures and ways of expression could unveil the early manifestations of the Arabs' philosophical thought and help capture the trends in transferring Greek concepts into the Arabic culture. In so doing, we could also show the first theoretical underpinning upon which later Muslim philosophers based themselves to explain and summarize the Greek heritage. Furthermore, it could show that many of the perceptions and terminologies which those philosophers presented were not all a product of their own thought. Rather, they based their interpretations on the earlier translators of the Greek philosophers.

This conference calls upon all interested parties and researchers in this field to examine and analyze these early translated texts in light of theoretical or historical approaches and to adopt practical approaches to these texts focusing on the following fields of studies:
