Constructing and Reconstructing the Medieval

8-10 July 2011
An interdisciplinary conference to be held in Beverley (Yorkshire)
Under the auspices of the University of Hull

Medieval culture underwent manifold transformations from the end of the Roman Empire into the modern world: the shape of 'the world', understandings of the Other, and developments in cultural form were, and remain, in constant flux. The conference aims to:

  • Explore ways in which the medieval was constructed, identified, and then reconstructed.
  • Open an interdisciplinary dialogue between international scholars on ways of 'reading' medieval identities that may equally speak to the contemporary world.
  • Investigate ways in which chronological and cultural parameters offer different perspectives on core concepts and paradigms. We do not seek to segment culture into high and low, nor restrict the medieval to a particular region or academic discipline or period.

Confirmed speakers include Karen Watt (Royal Armouries, Leeds), Paul Wackers (Utrecht), Stephen Knight (Cardiff), Paul Hardwick (Trinity, Leeds), Neil Sinyard (Hull)

Enquiries to: Dr Lesley Coote L.A.Coote@hull.ac.uk or Dr Adrian Tudor A.P.Tudor@hull.ac.uk

Papers of scholarly excellence, from the strictly traditional to the truly pioneering, examining all aspects of 'medieval identity' at the confluence of cultures are warmly invited. There will be a conference publication.

The conference is to be held the weekend before Leeds IMC; Beverley is a beautiful and lively medieval market town, an hour from Leeds. The town offers a variety of accommodation, at all prices. Fine medieval buildings include Beverley Minster (site of the important shrine of St John), St Mary's Church (founded 1124), and the Friary (visited by Henry V in 1421). Beverley was the home of a powerful musicians' guild and many others.
