Serge Doubrovsky's significance within the field of life writing is widely recognised throughout the world. He is acknowledged in both the Larousse and Robert French dictionaries for coining the term ‘autofiction', and has made a significant contribution to theorising this literary phenomenon. In addition, Doubrovsky's own autofictional writings have achieved widespread recognition: in 1989 he was awarded the ‘Prix Médicis' for Le Livre Brisé and in 1999, the ‘Prix de l'écrit intime' for Laissé pour Conte. All seven of his life writing texts continue to stimulate a rich vein of scholarly interest around the world.
