Call for papers for proposed panel at the Modernist Studies
Association conference, Rice University, Houston (October 12-16, 2001)

"Collecting Modernisms"

Papers on the topic of collecting in the modernist period, broadly defined. This panel will consider in particular the boundaries between collecting as cultural practice and aesthetic practice in the period. Potential topics include but are not limited to:

- Modernism and the poetics of collecting
- Modernism and the ethics of collecting
- Modernism and the psychology of collecting
- Museums at the turn of the century
- Exhibits of Modernist art
- Modernists and their collections
- Collecting and the avant-garde
- Collecting as an aesthetic model (collage, assemblage, etc.)
- Collecting and the "work of art"
- Books as consumer objects
- The fine press edition; livres dartistes
- Libraries - public and private - in the Modernist period
- Modernist antiquarianism
- The Victorian collector and the Modern collector
- Philology, anthropology and other classificatory systems
- Collecting and mass production
- The salon as "collection" of Modernists
- The Modernist anthology/little magazine as collection
- Current anthologies of Modernisms
- Archives of Modernist figures/movements/publications
- Modernism and the rare book trade today
