Assuming a presence: Lesbian inscriptions in
Francophone society and culture.

2-4 April 2004

Centre for Gender Studies in Europe
University of Sheffield, U.K.

Important recent work undertaken in French Studies has sought to restore to visibility evidence of Lesbian cultural and social practices obscured, effaced, pathologised or trivialised by dominant ideologies and discourse. Fresh interrogation of ontological debates in the light of recent research into gender formation has complemented the archaeological methodology of the discipline, providing the impetus for new critical perspectives across an increasingly broad range of aesthetic production and historical periods.

By way of this conference, the first British conference to focus entirely on Lesbian presence in Francophone society and culture, the organisers seek both to enrich established areas of debate and to open out still further this exciting field to hitherto under represented subject areas. Abstracts are therefore welcomed from all areas relative to Francophone Studies and from all historical periods. The following list serves as a guide (not exhaustive) to subjects which could be regarded as providing a challenging and novel focus for discussion.

* Lesbian theory/Queer theory and ontological inquiry.
* Urban, suburban and rural environment.
* Enterprise and entrepreneurism
* Sport, leisure and entertainment.
* Lesbian topoi in literature, correspondence, diaries, political
tracts.
* Lesbian writers, intellectuals and literary circles.
* Lesbian aesthetic in photography, fashion, plastic arts, interior
design, architecture and painting.
* Politics; political strategies and practice past and present.
* Representations of Lesbian culture in institutionally sponsored
literature and documentation.
* Lesbians and Lesbian themed cultural production in the
newspaper and magazine press, television, radio, popular fiction,
bande dessinée, film, video, music and the Internet.

It is anticipated that the conference proceedings will be published in the form of an edited book.
