PhD 1: “Carolus Magnus in Central America and Mexico" (under the supervision of E. Arioli)

The position is part of the ERC-funded project CAROLUS, which investigates the global afterlives of the “Matter of Carolus Magnus”. This specific research task focuses primarily on the study of the traditions about Carolus Magnus in Honduras but also Nicaragua, Belize and Mexico. The research entails the study of this entire corpus, analysing material ranging from the medieval sources of the epic of Carolus Magnus to its contemporary manifestations.

PhD 2: PhD: “Carolus Magnus in the Canary Islands and in the Romancero” (under the supervision of E. Arioli)

The position is part of the ERC-funded project CAROLUS, which investigates the global afterlives of the “Matter of Carolus Magnus”. This specific research task focuses primarily on the study of the romancero about Carolus Magnus in the Canary Islands (especially in La Gomera), but also on the pan-Hispanic romancero, as well as on a comparative study of other living theatrical traditions involving Charlemagne in Spain. The research entails the study of this entire corpus, analysing material ranging from the medieval sources of the epic of Carolus Magnus to its contemporary manifestations.

Main responsibilities:

1. Conduct in-depth research on the living traditions about Carolus Magnus analyzing their connections with the medieval epic of Carolus Magnus and modern literary traditions, their transformations over time, and their relationship with other comparable cultural forms.

2. Collect, document, and analyze oral, visual, and archival sources (fieldwork, interviews, recordings, iconographic materials etc.). Document live performances, gather local historical materials, and conduct interviews with participants and elders to trace the evolution of the tradition.

3. Write academic publications (one monography and papers) and support the overall scientific and organizational development of the project.

4. Participate actively in the enrichment of the project’s digital platform (including video editing, metadata structuring, and archival organization).

5. Collaborate actively with other research team members and external project partners.

6. Work closely with local institutions to valorize their collections and cultural heritage, and engage in outreach and dissemination initiatives.

7. Ensure full compliance with ERC open science and open access policies: all publications, data, and research outputs produced within the project must follow the Horizon Europe open access protocols and be deposited in open repositories, in accordance with ERC guidelines.

Fieldwork is expected : willingness and availability to undertake long and intensive fieldwork are required.

Required Education

Master degree in Letters or Arts or Cultural Heritage or History or Anthropology

Digital skills

If possible, proficiency in recording and editing videos, along with the ability to manage and update online portals

Languages

Full proficiency in Spanish

Good level in English or French

If possible at least a basic level of Portuguese

Experience

Strong academic writing skills and capacity to contribute to peerreviewed publications.

Familiarity with academic research standards, ans bibliographical reseach.

Experience in fieldwork research

Background in medieval studies, performance studies or anthropology.

Willingness to work collaboratively within a multicultural and interdisciplinary research environment.

 3 Good knowledge of the studied cultural contexts or the epic of Charlemagne
