Please send abstracts (up to 300 words) for papers 20 to 25 minutes in length along with a CV to Katherine Maynard and Jeff Kendrick by August 1, 2015. Successful applicants will be notified by September 1, 2015

Proposals for sessions are welcome and may be sent directly to the organizers. Session proposals should indicate the type of panel: traditional, roundtable discussion, workshop, etc. All types of panels will be considered.

This conference will include a series of panels on “Words of War, Wars of Words” to explore the performative aspects of words of war. Writing about war—in a literal or figurative sense—can itself be an act of war. The panels will consider not only the mentalities governing war and warfare of this time period; they will reflect on the nature of war itself and the role that our linguistic production has in shaping it. The organizers plan to publish as volume of essays drawn from these panels.

For these panels, possible topics of inquiry might include (but are not limited to):

  • War as metaphor
  • Love and war
  • Polemic and satire
  • Heroes and villains
  • Spaces of conflict
  • The global and local in war
  • Spaces of commemoration
  • War as an event
  • Emotions of war
  • Literary representation of war
  • Reactions/responses to war
  • Gender wars
