RÉSUMÉ

This is the first critical biography of Xavier Marmier. The celebrityof Marmier was such that his death made headline news in most majornewspapers in France. Marmier made his reputation as a traveller, travel writer, translator, literary critic, comparatist, journalist, novelist, poet, lecturer, linguist, ethnologist, social historian, andlatterly as an outspoken member of the Académiefrançaise. His work had a great deal of influence, both direct andindirect, on literary and intellectual developments in France, and alsohad a significant impact in a number of the countries he visited.
Althoughhis name still figures in studies of comparative literature or thehistory of travel writing, his innovations have gradually been eclipsedby his successors in various fields, resulting in the neglect of his overall achievements. Marmier'snumerous and diverse achievements are assessed here for the first timein their intellectual and historical context, and within the frameworkof his colourful and somewhat controversial private life.
Thisvolume will be essential reading for scholars and students of thehistory of nineteenth-century French literature andintellectual life, the history of literary criticism, travel writing, the introduction of foreign literature to France, and those with aninterest in the intellectual, social and cultural history of theregions Marmier visited.
