Salary: £44,620 - £59,914 per annum (plus £7,762 per annum taxable and pensionable College housing allowance and other benefits)

St Catherine’s College and the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and Literatures in the University of Oxford propose to appoint a Tutorial Fellow and Associate Professor in French, with effect from 1 October 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a permanent full-time position based at St Catherine’s College, Manor Road, Oxford, OX1 3UJ with some responsibilities carried out at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, 41 & 47 Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JF.

The person appointed will be expected to engage in advanced study or research in Early Modern French literature (sixteenth to eighteenth centuries), and to give high-quality tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision in French at both undergraduate and graduate level.

The main duties of the role will be to engage in scholarly research and publication in Early Modern French literature (sixteenth to eighteenth centuries); to share responsibility for the organisation, supervision and teaching of Modern Languages at St Catherine’s College including arrangements for the admission of new students; to give lectures and supervise graduate students on behalf of the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and Literatures; to take part in University examining; to act as College Advisor to St Catherine’s College graduate students in Modern Languages and cognate areas; and to participate in the administration of the College and Faculty. The appointee will be an Official Fellow of St Catherine’s College and a trustee and member of its Governing Body.

Applicants should have a doctorate and research record of international standing appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, with evidence of and potential for producing further distinguished research. They should have near-native competence in French, the ability to teach French language at undergraduate level, and native or near-native competence in English. The appointee will be expected to demonstrate evidence of excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching French literature, particularly to undergraduates.
