CALL FOR PAPERS

Crossing the borders: Germany between exiles and explorations

The CCGES(Canadian Centre for German and European Studies) of the Université de Montréalis organizing a bilingual (French-English) multidisciplinary «jeunes chercheurs»symposium titled «Crossing the borders:Germany between exiles and explorations» which will be held in Montréal the7 and 8th novembre 2008. You areinvited to send your proposals of communication before August 15, 2008.

Description

The aim of this multidisciplinary symposium, which will bringtogether essentially PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, is to study thedifferent kinds of travels or journeys through the German borders, from theWeimar Republic until today.

During the 20th century, different historical events contributed totransform the shape of the German territory: the expansion brought about by theimperialistic politics  of the ThirdReich is followed, at the end of the war, by the division of the countrybetween the Allies. Next, the creation of the Iron Curtain splits up the nationfor 40 years. Finally, the German Reunification, the development of theEuropean Union and the redefinition of European citizenship at the end of thecentury all contribute to redefine the German sense of belonging.

We want to explore the consequencesof these constant modifications of borders on the definition of the representationsof German identity. Closely linked to these political and territorialtransformations are the development of different migration patterns: the flightof the Jews during World War II, or the getaway of the Nazis after the Germandefeat; the escape of East Germans through the Iron Curtain during the ColdWar, or the massive immigration — a response to economical needs — which followedthe fall of the Eastern Block.

The aim of this project is to studythe different types of crossings of the German borders, either using literary, artistic, philosophic, sociological or historical approaches. We wish to detectthe influence of these migrations on the construction of the German nationalidentity, since the Weimar Republic.

The physical crossing of borders isclosely linked to the transformation of others borders, of categories, including that of medias and artistic or literary genres. We wish to explorenew kinds of travel writings which have been developed in Germany since theWeimar Republic, building on such traditions as the Bildungsroman and the Wanderernovels. Literature, film, television and photography will be considered.

Some examples of topics:

-       Genres dealing with border crossings, and the bordercrossings of genres

-       Migrations,exodus and exiles

-       Throughthe Iron Curtain

-       Animmigrant's perspective

-       Filmson travels; literary or artistic travel diaries

-       Virtualtravels: beyond the borders of the reality
