The Representation of the Habsburgs in the Arts

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Following our conference in Vienna on 19-20 May 2016 (`The Cultural Representation of the Habsburgs’, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph and the coronation of the last Habsburg emperor, Karl IV, in 1916), we are in the process of securing a contract with a publisher for a volume with a working title of The Representation of the Habsburgs in the Arts. We hope that the volume will appear by the end of 2018, marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the Habsburg Empire.

We are inviting abstracts (500 words) for researched essays on the literary, cinematic and artistic (spatial arts and music) representation of the Habsburgs.  It is likely that the volume will focus on the period since 1740 but at this stage we will also consider abstracts focusing on earlier periods.  Essays written in English should be approximately 6000 words in length, including notes.

The volume will be edited by Professor Peter I. Barta (University of Surrey and Texas Tech University), Dr Suzanna Ivanic (University of Cambridge) and Professor Phil Powrie (University of Surrey)

The deadline for abstracts is 30 SEPTEMBER 2016; submissions should be sent to p.barta@surrey.ac.uk.
