The Humanities: Community, Identity and the Quest for the Good Life
Keynote Speaker: Françoise Lionnet

We welcome proposals that focus on :
· Representations and/or quest of the self and the other; alterity (text, film, theatre, painting, etc.)
· Geographical identity; space and identity
· Travel literature
· Exotic/exoticism/orientalism
· Poetics/politics of community and/ or identity
· Diaspora; immigrants and immigration/literature of the exile
· Displacement, territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization
· Community and the stranger
· Community, identity and the body, self vs. collectivity
· Communitarism and communism
· Fictional spaces: towns / country, suburbs / city centers; fictional geography and/or community
· Intertextual identities/communities; mythical communities/identities
· Colonial and post-colonial literature
· Verbal and iconic representations of community, identity and the good life in cinema and in visual arts (cartoons, posters, advertisements, etc)
· Teaching about community and identity
· Memory, history, community and trauma
· Gender identities; feminism, queer studies
· Mass Culture and the good life
· Marginality and the good life

Topics dealing with Francophone Literature (including Islamic and other religious issues, racial minorities, and linguistic minorities), and Gender Studies (including sex and sexuality, and womens studies) are particularly welcome.Papers may be presented in English, French or Italian.
Those interested in presenting a paper should submit an abstract to Adriana Golumbeanu, golumbeanu.2@osu.edu, by Friday, February 21, 2004. Papers should not exceed 20 minutes in length (8-10 pages).
