The Collapse of Black Family in African American Women’s Novels

Deadline: May 31, 2015

The relationship within the Black family is developed as an essential theme in many African American women’s writings. Inspired from African Americans’ daily experience, the black family is described as one that has lost its true African family values, what makes the family a place of brotherhood, belonging, and sharing, and puts the family at the core of any human activity. For example, The Color Purple, The Bluest Eye, The Women of Brewster Place, Their Eyes Were Watching God, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, etc., portray the black family as a fragmented unit. The causes of this fragmentation are multiple. The family then appears as a place of disorder, “chaos,” de-structuration, and questioning of human values.

In view of a collective book, authors are invited to submit articles on themes including, but not limited to:

  • Violence and divorce as a source of the dislocation of the Black family unit
  • Divorce as a source of dysfunctional family
  • Pastoral space and the Black family
  • Homosexuality as an alternative to Women’s subjugation to men
  • Patriarchy vs matriarchy

Articles should be sent to Pr. N’GUESSAN Kouadio Germain, University Felix Houphouet-Boigny (kouadiogermain@yahoo.fr) or Pr. COULIBALY Daouda, University Alassane Ouattara (ndbaly@hotmail.com)

Deadline for submission: May 31, 2015
