The Department of French and Italian, University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in French Literature, beginning July 1, 2015. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching focus on aspects of the “long” French Enlightenment (ca. 1670-1815), with a strong background in the literature, philosophy, and culture of this period. The successful candidate will bring a comparative perspective to bear on the study of literature and will be able to contribute to existing initiatives such as the Graduate Center for Literary Research, the French track in Comparative Literature, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in French and at least one other European literary tradition. Secondary specializations in a cognate field (e.g. history, political science, science and technology, translation studies, cultural studies) are welcome although not required. The successful candidate will teach in both the French and Comparative Literature programs, including large humanities courses on European literary culture, smaller courses for the French major, and graduate seminars. The ability to conduct courses at all levels in French and English is essential, as is evidence of outstanding research (or research potential). Ph.D. is expected by the time of appointment.
