Study Abroad in Senegal: The Dakar Institute of African Studies (summer)

The Dakar Institute of African Studies is currently accepting applications for our 2015 summer study abroad program in Dakar, Senegal. Our program is open to all students attending an accredited institution and who are interested in issues pertaining to Africa.  It is of particular interest to French/Francophone Studies and African Studies majors.  Our Francophone Studies program offers classes in French while our African Studies program is in English. All students will be staying with Senegalese families.

The originality of the DIAS Summer Program springs from its structure and organization. It is taught by its founding members, most of whom are professors at institutions of higher education in the U.S. and are also alumni of Cheikh Anta Diop University. This unique situation allows us to teach high quality summer courses, which are up to American standards of university teaching, research, and innovation, in a country where we are comfortable both academically and culturally.  One of the highlights of the DIAS Summer Programs is the mutual participation of local students and those coming from abroad. This is intended to create a community between students from Senegal and those from the U.S. and Europe that will enable peers from abroad and from Senegal to learn the particularities of their respective cultures and to develop inter-cultural dialogue and understanding.

Our fields of expertise include History and International Studies, African Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Philosophy, African Literature, Comparative Literature, Post-Colonial Studies, Education, and Gender Studies. We are also collaborating with other experts in areas (Economics, Development, Political Science, etc.) that might be of interest to the students who will be participating in our program.

This year, we are offering a May session (May 11-June 10) and a late summer session (June 27-July 31).  Each session will have a Francophone studies cohort and an Anglophone studies cohort.
