Space, Haunting, Discourse
15-18 June, 2006

The department of English at Karlstad University, Sweden, invites session organizers and topics for an international, multidisciplinary conference with a focus on different relationships between space, haunting and discourse. With this first call for papers we encourage researchers, teachers and students in different disciplines to help us shape this conference by sending in proposals for sessions, problem areas and topics that explore discourses on space in different disciplines. We hope to attract researchers from fields in the natural sciences as well as from the humanities and social sciences.

The suggestions on the list below are meant to serve as triggers for brainstorming and a call for session organizers and topics. The conference organizers would be pleased to have sessions on these or other aspects of the conference's general theme: space related to haunting and/or different discourses.

-Mediated Space
-Discourse and Outer Space
-Space vs. Place
-Destabilizing Notions of Space
-Haunted Spaces: Haunting Discourses
-Cultural Space
-Inner and Outer Space
-Gender and Space
-Topography: Fictional and Material Spaces
-Postcolonial Hauntings (Re-Collections): Voodoo in Cyberspace
-Cyber Cartographies
-Dystopias and Utopias
-Space and Time

Each session will last for one and a half hours, and the organizer decides the format for the individual session: for instance, a panel with three related 20-minute papers and discussions, a round-table discussion, a workshop.

The following information should be pasted into an e-mail message:
- Session title:
- Session organizer(s): (full name, institution, and e-mail address)
- Format: (panel, round-table, workshop, etc.)
- Short description of session: (250-300 words)

Deadline: Session proposals received by March 15, 2005, stand the best chance of inclusion in the program.

We also welcome proposals for individual (15-20 minute) papers and presentations. Please send the following information in an e-mail message:
- Paper or presentation title:
- Contact person: (full name, institution, and e-mail address)
