 HAITI, CUBA & LOUISIANA
Two-Week History & Culture Research Intensive in Santiago de Cuba
June 25-July 11, 2004
Â
Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Haitian Revolution by traveling to Santiago de Cuba to research the impact of the Haitian revolution on Eastern Cuba. Katherine Dunham and Gwendolyn Midlo Hall are both planning to attend this research trip. The Haitian revolution of 1804 established the first independent black republic led by former slaves.
For most of the past two hundred years Haiti's history has been one of intermittent intervention by both the USA and France. Eastern Cuba and Haiti are intimately connected through their shared struggles for independence linked inseparably to African-American struggles to abolish slavery and achieve equality and self-determination.
Santiago de Cuba, situated in the heart of Eastern Cuba, has been the center for many of Cuba's struggles for independence. Eastern Cuba is significant in Louisiana's history since thousands of French-Haitian refugees migrated between Santiago de Cuba and Louisiana throughout the early 19th century.
Katherine Dunham is one of the most significant dance artists and anthropologists of the 20th century. Her fieldwork in the West Indies eventually led her to live in Haiti half of the time and to become a priestess in the vodoun religion. It also led her to develop the Dunham Technique, incorporating Afro-Caribbean dance into American modern dance and ballet. Ms. Dunham will be 95 years old this June. Dr. Gwendolyn Midio Hall will be furthering her research about African ethnicities in the Americas, including their transfer to Louisiana. Dr. Hall will be 75 years old this June.
It's vitally important that information exchange keeps happening between the U.S. and Cuban scholarly and artistic communities. In light of recent events in Haiti, we will be looking at current U.S. policy towards Haiti and towards Cuba, against the backdrop of the historical connections between these two island nations.
This research trip is legal for professional historians and cultural  researchers. Arrangements can also be made for groups of students to attend.
